History
Stewarts Mill in Coalisland was built in 1911 in the Canal Basin operated by the Lagan Navigation Company. Robert Stewarts and Sons owned a flour Mill on the Dungannon road, but expanded the business and built a new improved mill. The architect, Thomas Henry designed the building.
Due to the Coalisland Canal, its location was perfectly suited to transport ground corn to other markets in the country. However, the Canal beside the Cornmill was abandoned in 1954 as lorries instead began to transport the grain from the 1930’s onwards. Ultimately, competition from Belfast and cheaper imports sealed the fate of the mill. President Mary Robinson officially opened the refurbished Cornmill in 1993.
